My Broken Hand

By Leonardo, Age 12

I was excited one day because I liked to go to school. My mom woke me up very early. I got ready for school. The bus came and we went to school. After a few moments, we go there and I was so excited. I played football during recess. While I was playing, Charlie, a student, threw the ball and it hit my hand. I did not realize it at the time, but it broke my hand. My hand hurt.

Mr. Mike took me to my dad and he asked my uncle to take us to the hospital in Orange Walk. We got to Orange Walk and the man said that they could not examine me. My dad said that we had to come back the next day. I was very sad. The doctor gave me something to hold my hand so it did not hurt.

In the morning, we went to the doctor and she said she could see us. The gave me an x-ray. They saw that my hand was broken. They took me and then they laid me on a bed. The doctor said, “When I count to three, we will pull his hand,” and they began to pull my hand. Suddenly they fixed my hand and then they put on a cast. It was itchy. I was so sad with the cast on my hand.

It took one month for my hand to heal. Eventually the doctor said we could take it off. They cut it off. I was so happy! I could play football again. That was the saddest experience of my life.

Comments from the HCGS GenYES technology class:

Holden - Two years ago my dad was going elk hunting, and I was riding my four-wheeler. I rolled it wearing flip-flops and shorts with a t-shirt. I was stuck under the four-wheeler. My right hand was broken in five places, but a good thing was that I could write with both hands.

Hunter - Sorry to hear about your hand. When you said football, did you mean soccer or American football? I broke my finger bowling.

Allyssa - I've broken both of my arms and it stinks because you can't do anything. Were you playing American football? I like to play football at recess, too.

Everett - I guess I'm lucky that I've never broken an arm. You like school, too? I'm one of the few who does in my class. What kind of football were you playing--soccer or American?

Michael - I am sorry that you broke your hand. It sounded like it was very painful. I have never gotten hurt when I played football.

Graham - I know how it felt. I broke my hand by falling off a jungle gym about 15 feet up. I hope you are well.

Comments from Casey Community School Standard 4 & 5 students (Gallon Jug):

Leonardo - I was playing soccer when I broke my hand. Everett, yes, I like school. Most of the students like school because we like to joke with our teacher, Ms. Kim.

Victor - When Leonardo broke his hand, his brother, Denbert, said, "My brother's going to die!" It's a good thing he didn't die. Allyssa, how did you brake both of your arms? Holden, how did your four-wheeler accident happen? Why did it flip over?

Alexis - The latest accident Leonardo had was getting stuck in the trash can when he was goofying off.
