When I First Came to Gallon Jug

By Angela, Age 12

When we were in Cayo, my father got a new job at Gallon Jug so we had to move. When my mom and dad were packing up, my friend and I were playing for the last time. When we needed to go we started crying. Then when we reached Gallon Jug, we were amazed by such a clean place it was. We started unpacking our bags.

Then we went to meet Mr. Mike and Ms. Jill. A few days after,I went to the school and I knew Mr. Mike and Ms. Jill, so they introduced me to some girls and boys. Mr. Mike and Ms. Jill made me feel comfortable at the school. I was very shy. I didn’t want to talk to anyone. Everybody was very different from me. At school we did some games. Mr. Mike and Ms. Jill were so kind to me and my family.

At the end of the day my mom came to pick me up from school. Over the next two days I made two new friends. From then on I wasn’t shy anymore.

Comments from the HCGS GenYES technology class:

Autumn - If I had to move to a different city away from my friends I would be sad, too. I wouldn't like to be the new girl in school. I am very shy also. I think I would get used to being new after awhile, just like you.

Gabi - My name is Gabi, and I am 11 years old. How long have you been at that school? I've been going to the same school since I was in Head Start.

Sabre - Hey Angela! I had two friends that had moved away when I was in kindergarten. I miss them a lot! I bet you miss your friends, too. But after they moved, I realized I wasn't the only one who missed them. Hope I can talk to you again sometime!

Faith - I like your story. I like new people. Your friends must be nice.

Comments from the Casey Community School Standard 4 & 5 students (Gallon Jug):

Angela - Gabi, I have been at this school for 4 years. Last month, Hurricane Richard came through and a huge tree fell by our school garden. Autumn, if I had moved to Kansas, I would have been friends with you because we have many things in common.

Dubin - I have lived in Gallon Jug since I was a baby, but last year I moved to Guatemala and then came back.

Jasmin - Everybody in this school has a nickname. For example, Ronaldo is Chano. Angela is Pangea or Continental Drift. They call me Cha-Che. Victor is called Victoria Peak. Alexis is Leskis. Gary is Pancho. Dubin is nicknamed Rubin.

Danielle - I was absent the day we did this. I have never moved to a different town. Before I used to be really shy, but I am not that shy anymore. I moved into my new house, just a couple of miles away, at the beginning of the school year.
